The best donuts on the planet are at Schat’s Bakery in Bishop, CA. A third generation baker from Holland, they are a full service bakery that invented Sheepherder’s bread. Everything they do is top notch, like only using Montana wheat in their products (something about the gluten content), and Eric Schat claims the the water is a key ingredient - pure cool water from the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada. They have previously been named best donut in America. Their raised glazed is the best I’ve had, and I crave the lemon filled or the cinnamon twist or one of his danish.
You have to try COOPER’S BAKERY in Amite, Louisiana. They have the BEST donuts ever.
The glazed donuts and the glazed twist are classics. VERY POPULAR with the locals.
May I suggest, when you get to Indiana (why would you need to go to Indiana other than maybe a basketball fix) head to Muncie, home of Ball State University and Concannon’s Pastry Shop. Concannon’s is famous for their cream cakes, but I think they make some of the best donuts I have ever had. I am a Concannon’s donut hole addict (strawberry or vanilla), but only because I had to force myself off of their caramel-iced cream filled long johns! Their cream filling is legend! I worked in a small town bakery in high school that made the best donuts known to man, so I consider myself a donut connoisseur. Concannon’s glazed yeast pretzel twist is also noteworthy. It is quite large and the glaze is perfect on this soft, just doughy enough, confection.
Try Jessica’s in Ship Bottom NJ for the best cream filled donuts ever! They are on Long Beach Boulevard between 29th and 30th Streets. The cream is heavenly - like whipped cream frosting!
Jerry’s Donuts in Rapid City, South Dakota. I am 68 years old and originally from Chicago, Illinois. I grew up with Clyde’s Donuts on Chicago’s north side. Have never found an equal white cake doughnut with chocolate icing until I moved to South Dakota. Jerry’s doughnuts are equal to Clyde’s in Chicago. They are fried til crispy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside and then dunked in the thickest chocolate icing. Fantastic. they deserve a write-up. Visit them and see. Also, their french crullers, we called them french doughnuts at Clydes, is just as good, kind of a little bit greasy and full of the best sugar icing. Mmmmmm. Not sure if Jerry’s has a website or not.
I have lived in many places from East Coast to West Coast: from Old Town, Maine to San Pablo, California residing presently in Ada, Oklahoma and have never found a donut that even compares to Labree’s Donuts in Old Town, Maine.
Their delicious chocolate cake donuts literally melt in your mouth. Check out their website!!
You must try these donuts if at all possible.

this isn’t about donuts (although Harrison Bakery in Syracuse makes great glazed and cinnamon donuts) but i just read your article on hot dogs on yahoo. You have got to go to Heid’s Hot Dogs in Liverpool N.Y. Great dogs grilled any way you want with an excellent mustard, just spicy enough yet won’t overpower the dog. Also, Hoffmann hot dogs are probably the best dog you can get (I think) and are made right here in Syracuse.
If you find yourself travelling to Erie, Pa, perhaps to enjoy the 13 miles of white sand beaches on beautiful Presque Isle (french for ‘almost an island’), it will be worth your while to stop at H&K DoNut Shop on West Lake Road. Nothing fancy, just coffee and doughnuts in an austere setting. But man, those glazed must be made with cocaine, because you will not be able to stop at just a couple. They are soft and fluffy, never heavy or dry and the glaze is just perfect, not too sweet or thick. Heaven is gonna have to be quite something in order to meke me want to go there rather than H&K! And they just happen to be made in the same town as Smith’s hot dogs, quite possibly the world’s finest (but I could be biased). Stop by!
GOLDEN DONUTS in FRESNO, CA: While they don’t have any unusual donuts, they do all the regulars and they do it better than just about anyone in town! First off, they know how to work with yeast. Their raised donuts are the standard of what a raised donut should be… fluffy, never greasy, just sweet enough.. and their glaze is more buttery than sugary.. the cake and old fashioneds are delicious too…with just enough nutmeg to let you know its there.
BTW, to ANNE MATTHEWS…. I used to live down the road from Ada, in Francis..and I still have relatives in Ada. I wouldn’t mind moving back there, it’s a much better place to live than Fresno, CA!
Come to Seattle and leave your hydrogenated donuts behind.

I second glenn’s suggestion for Donut Dip in West Springfield, MA. Hasn’t changed since the ’50s. Fantastic donuts.
I have yet to try this next one, but people rave about it… Mrs. Murphy’s in Southwick, MA. Apparently the donuts are often mistaken for ring-shaped tickets to eternal bliss.
The best donut i ever had was from Allies donuts in Rhode Island.
The best bar none. Born and raised there, used to stop there every Sunday on the way to visit my grandmothers. They where always jam packed on the weekends but it was worth the wait. A++++++++
As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of fine pastries (donuts in particular), I’d have to say that Countrystyle Donuts on Williamsburg Road in Richmond, VA makes the BEST donuts that my mouth has ever experienced. Their donuts are so good that I drive an almost 50 mile round-trip (paying tolls both ways) once a month just to get a dozen…or two. I used to go twice a month, but after doing the math ($15 in gas/tolls for $6 worth of donuts), I had to cut back. Don’t be fooled by the run-down building that this business is run out of. This place has been around for a long time. Maybe someday when I retire I’ll just move closer. BEST DONUTS IN THE WORLD!!
How about Schneider’s Bakery in Uptown Westerville, Ohio?? A favorite among the local college students when they open at 2:00 a.m. with hit, fresh glazed donuts!!
Bloedow Bakery in Winona, Minnesota has the best donuts made the old fashioned way!! A family-owned neighborhood shop featuring fresh baked bread, rolls, donuts and pastries. People come from all over to eat these donuts. When Krispy Kreme tried to sell donuts in Winona, Bloedow’s ran them out of town! Everyone in this area knows Bloedow’s is the only place to get donuts.
One of the fastest growing franchises in the east, eclectic, with a great true story on how they got their name, and where you can even create your own donuts! The Fractured Prune! The web page on their site with the pictures their specialty donuts is a work of art! When they had only one location at the shore folks lined up for an hour wait.
I went to a new one in our small town near our little train station each morning for a hand dipped hot made to order donut and coffee before the train came. Yes, MADE TO ORDER and served hot! http://www.fracturedprune.com/specialty.php
You haven’t mentioned to many places in the south. You have to try Daylight Donuts in Johnson City, TN. They are only open from 5am to 11am and are usually sold out by 8. I used to be a KK fan until I tried these. If you get them hot, they melt in your mouth. THey have many flavors but I have only tried the glazed. They are located a block from ETSU.

This is the best bakery in Minnesota! They tried to put a kripy kreme in town and KK could not compete. Do go early becasue they are usually sold out by 10am. The Maple long Johns are the best!
The spudnut shop in Richland, WA. We don’t have many things to say for our town, but this is definitely one of them! They are best fresh, so get there fairly early.
Try Schuler’s Bakery in Springfield Ohio. There are two locations. Rumor has it that the frosting for their Bavarians is made by a man who is probably in his nineties by now and he is the only person who knows how to make it. He makes it in those white buckets that bakeries are so fond of. They are the best donuts in the entire world.
The Donut Stop in Amarillo Texas. Beat out the infamous (though rather disgusting in my Amarilloan opinon) Krispy Kreme and makes the BEST cherry donuts…EVER
If you’re ever in Seattle venture down to the quaint suburb of Puyallup and try Happy Donuts! Always perfect, always scrumptous and always served by the nicest most efficient folks.
Ohlin’s Bakery, 456 Common Street in Cushing Square, Belmont, Mass. (established 1915) makes a fantastic honey-dipped donut. They’re good anytime, but between 6-8am they are an out of body experience. They have a lot of other old school bakery fare, too, such as cardamom bread, Irish Soda Bread and maple frosted muffins.
OH MY - apparently you have not had a donut from Becker’s! You may not want to hear this but I have never liked donuts in my life. My husband; however, is a HUGE fan and eats them all the time…..I have tried bites of them all but never liked a donut until I had Becker’s - my husband’s absolute favorite. You HAVE to try them!!!! Forget about the fact that their nut bear claws and white cake are OUT OF THIS WORLD DELICIOUS!!!! I went from being a donut hater to showing up at the shop every Saturday morning!!!!
You simply must go to Banbury Cross Dounuts in Salt Lake City. Get there before 9AM because the sell out every day. Corner of 700 East and 700 South. Try the cinnamon crumb and the cake donuts… so good!
I HAVE THE ALTIME BEST DONUT AROUND….THIS PARTICULAR DONUT PUT ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS DONUT COMPANIES OUT OF BUSINESS HERE IN AMARILLO, TEXAS. THE NOW FAMOUS “DONUT STOP” IN AMARILLO, TEXAS RAN THE WORLD FAMOUS KRISPY KREME OUT OF TOWN. THE BUILT A NICE FANCY KRISPY KREME ON I-40 RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN THINKING THAT WOULD HELP BUSINESS. THEY CONNED THE BIGGEST CONVENIENCE STORE OWNER TO JUST SELL THERE DONUTS. NOTHING WORKED! THE BIG FANCY STORE ON I-40 IS CLOSED NOW AND THE BIG CONVENIENCE STORE HAD TO BEG TO CARRY THE “DONUT STOP” DONUTS. COME BY AND TRY FOR YOURSELF. THEY HAVE A FANCY NEW STORE ON I-40 AND BELL STREET NOW… THANKS TO K.K.
Tato-Nut in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. I can’t b elive your cross country trek took you so close (Cafe Dumond in New Orlean’s is only about 50 minutes away). This is a family owned donut shop since 1960’s (another one in Vancleave, MS - by same family) - they are made from potatoe flour and are absolutley WONDERFUL! Both my mom and me love our sweets and she is pretty hard to please - she said “they are probably the best I have tasted.” Go east on I-10 from New Orleans until you reach Ocean Springs. Go to washington blvd., an dit is ona side st. from the historical section. You will love these - I promise. We stick w/ the simple - glazed and choc. covered.
The apple cider donuts at Honey-Pot Hill Orchards in Stow, MA: of course they taste great, but the smell, ahhh! I can show you the secret spot (under the vents) from which the cider scent is strongest.
ALTHOUGH DUNKIN DONUTS IS OUR REGULAR PIT STOP FOR COFFEE & DONUTS WE OCCASSIONALLY TREAT OURSELVES TO THE BEST DONUTS IN THE AREA. WHITEHOUSE FRUIT FARM ON RT. 62 IN CANFIELD, OHIO MAKES THE “BEST” DONUTS I’VE EVER EATEN. THEY HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF BOTH REGULAR AND SEASONAL. CRISP OUTER CRUST WITH A CAKE CENTER. EVERY TYPE OF ICING YOU CAN IMAGINE. I TREATED MYSELF TO A NEW SELECTION RECENTLY. S’MORES DONUT…IT WAS WONDERFUL. THE BLUEBERRY AND APPLE DONUTS ARE GREAT TOO!
