mr-donut-man.JPGDonuts were integral to the first Wayne’s World. Wayne and Garth were regulars at the fictional “Stan Mikita’s Donut Shop,” an obvious nod to Canada’s biggest Donut chain, Tim Horton’s. Tim was a hockey player for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the ’50s and ’60s, as was Stan for the Chicago Blackhawks. The police officer in the shop is Officer Koharski, no doubt a refrence to NHL referee Don Koharski who was once told by New Jersey Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld to “Have another donut, you fat pig” after a playoff game (incident covered by Blognut here).

The best known Donut scene from the movie has Garth anthropomorphizing a Donut man he’s created by sticking pieces of a glazed twist together with coffee stirrers and asking it, “Hey Mr. Donut Head man, who’s trying to kill you? I don’t know, but they better not.” Then he stabs it repeatedly with a small red hockey stick.

To help fight the winter doldrums and better explore the Donut as pop icon, we’re kicking off a new series called Donut Screenshots. Posts will feature notable – or maybe not so notable - scenes prominently depicting Donuts from either movies or TV shows. All screenshots will be permenantly linked in that small TV over there on the right.

And could there be a better place to start than Twin Peaks? The scene where Agent Cooper and Sheriff Harry Truman are sitting at a table of double-stacked Donuts really represents David Lynch at his finest. Who double stacks Donuts? Lynch’s ingenious knack for perversity extends even into his breakfast arrangements.
